Johor is overall national landscape competition winners | | JOHOR BARU, March 5: Johor has emerged the overall champion of the National Landscape Award Competition 2002, bagging five of the total 15 categories contested. This is the third year in a row that Johor has won the overall award. Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman received the award from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on National Landscape Day 2003 in Kuala Lumpur on Monday. Winners from Johor are Samian Sulaiman of No 25 ,Jalan 2/15 Taman Sri Kluang for the terrace house (middle lot) category, Johor Baru Central Municipal Council for the local authority category, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for the institute of higher learning category, Masjid Jamek Al Raudah, Senai, for the mosque category and Taman Kejiranan Setia Indah for the community garden category. The Che Luan Khor Rehabilitation Association of Kluang also won the runner-up title for the non-Muslim house of worship category. State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Jimmy Low said Johor's achievement in the competition was made even better when it received the complementary award for being the State which planted the most number of trees last year. He said 120,000 trees were planted in Johor last year, which exceeded the target of 74,000 per State, set by the National Landscape Department. "We had achieved this recognition due to the State Government's political will and commitment as well as the co-operation of all local authorities in the State," he said after attending the State Executive Council meeting here today. He added that Johor's policy requiring housing developers to submit landscape plans for their projects before aprovals for their projects could be obtained, had contributed to Johor's good showing at the competition. "Under this policy, we ensure that the developers carry out their landscape plan, failing which they will not get their project's CF (certificate of fitness for occupation)." Low said the State Government would strive to maintain Johor's grip on the landscape competition in the years to come by providing incentives to potential winners. Source : NST |
